Mitsubishi grabs a piece of performance market with Galant Ralliart
RSS Feed

Mitsubishi attempts to compete in the stock performance arena with its 2007 Galant Ralliart. If vehicle owners judged cars solely by their looks, the 2007 Mitsubishi Galant Ralliart would fare well; however, its looks are deceiving.

Emblazoned on a grill that melds seamlessly into the hood of the Ralliart is a subtle orange and red badge, distinguishing it from the ordinary Gallant.  The emblem appears to be borrowed from more prominent German lines, enough to raise an eyebrow from German car enthusiasts.

On paper, the Gallant Ralliart is reported to go 0-60 MPH in "about" seven seconds.  After putting the hammer to the throttle, the 233.6-cubic-inch V-6 responded well, but the front-wheel drive had a mind of its own, as it meandered from side to side.

The 258-HP engine, also found in the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, is mated to a five-speed automatic Sportronic transmission that works in concert with the engine to put out 258 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 RPM.The Ralliart is powered by a 233.6-cubic-inch V-6 that Mitsubishi officials say achieves 0-60 MPH in

Press releases state that the Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) enables the engine to produce 222 lb.-ft. of torque at just 2,000 RPM, a feature that makes it quick off the line.

Of course, Mitsubishi had to equip the Ralliart with a sport-tuned suspension that responded well while cornering at high speeds, although every bump can be felt with this type of suspension--especially when the 18-inch rims are wrapped in low-profile Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires.  This setup doesn't add up to a smooth ride.

The black leather steering wheel and gear shifter's red stitching contributed to the Ralliart's sporty look and feel.  But an awkwardly placed navigation system detracted from the initial impression.  The clumsy software used to operate the navigation system and radio was equally dissatisfying.

Perhaps its saving grace is that the production of the Gallant Ralliart is keeping Americans employed at its Normal, Ill., assembly plant that also produces the Endeavor, Eclipse, and Eclipse Spyder.

The window sticker on the four-door Ralliart is $29,474.  This price included an extra $1,850 for the navigation package and $625 for destination and handling.
