Strongsville, Ohio--A 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta sporting a lustrous PPG finish took three top awards, "Best of Show," "Best of Class," and "Most Elegant," at the 58th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monterey, Calif., in August.
The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is the world's premier celebration of the automobile. Only the most beautiful and rarest cars are invited to appear on the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The Alfa Romeo, owned by Jon and Mary Shirley of Medina, Wash., was meticulously restored by Dennison International Motorsports of Puyallup, Wash., and painted by Byers Custom & Restoration in Auburn, Wash. The 8C 2900B was Alfa Romeo's most prestigious grand touring car of the 1930s. Only 33 vehicles were ever completed for road use.

Byers Custom & Restoration painted the car a deep navy blue using PPG's Deltron basecoat/clearcoat to restore the finish to Concours d'Elegance caliber. Asked why he chose Deltron products, Jon Byers said, "Our customers want their classics to have the best. So we use PPG paint. It's user-friendly and outstanding for color accuracy."
Byers said he has been using PPG coatings since 1983 and has attended a number of training sessions in color matching and custom painting. He has had at least one award winner at Pebble Beach every year since 1996.

John Anderson, refinish instructor at PPG's Kent, Wash., Business Development Center, said of the Shirleys' Alfa Romeo, "Winning one award at such a prominent show is remarkable. Taking three is extremely rare. This is equivalent to capturing the Triple Crown in horse racing."
