Jim Lunsford (l.), owner of Schuck's Transmission in Hayward, and Speed Warehouse's General Manager Ron Edwall stand next to Lansford's top-fuel dragster at the Midnight Madness sales event and car show on Aug. 25 at Speed Warehouse/Vic Hubbard Auto Supply in Hayward. Hayward, Calif.-Vintage hot rods and sale prices on performance parts and accessories attracted more than 1,500 people to Hayward the evening of Aug. 21 for Speed Warehouse/Vic Hubbard Supply's Midnight Madness.

From 6 p.m. until midnight, the crowd enjoyed free hot dogs, music from FM radio station 107.7, vintage hot rods, and great deals on parts.  Speed Warehouse General Manager Ron Edwall said he was pleased with the turnout.

"This is the third consecutive year we've done these events," Edwall said.  "We hold them on the last Thursday of every month during the summer, and it just seems to get bigger and more popular each time.  From l., Johnny Rivera, salesman, Gustavo Cruz, sales manager, and Owner Omar Salgado, all of JDS Car Depot, a car and truck accessory retailer with stores in San Leandro and Oakland, show off their custom trucks at Midnight Madness.

"With over 100 classic street vehicles, muscle cars, and various high-performance vehicles, it's a great opportunity for hot rod owners to show off their cars," he said.  "We even had some dragsters and drag boats this time.  You never know what you're going to see."

Several OE manufacturers were also on hand to show off their newest products, Edwall said.  And sale prices on every part and accessory kept the floor packed right up until the midnight hour, he said.

"We waive the sales tax and match all mail-order prices at this event," he said.  "Customers stock up on stuff, and it helps make our sales month very successful.  The entire community of car enthusiasts comes out and supports Midnight Madness, and it's become a big deal."

From l., Technician Luis Tellez, Owner Ravi Gogna, and Manager Steve Waters of Speed Freaks Industries, a dyno tuning and muscle car performance shop in Tracy, answer questions and meet potential customers at Midnight Madness.

Such a deal!! I can remember when you guys were next to the Fire House as Volunteer Fireman, back in the 50\'s and I believe you still have my \"East Bay Studies of San Leandro\" car plack on your wall. The silouette of my 1953 Stude Commander V8 Coupe, 304.5 cubic incher, Paxton Huffer, 420hp. Do you want to get rid of that plack on your wall behind the counter?? I was the founder/president of this club at the old age of 20. I\'m now 72 and still a hotrodder at heart and you guys made me that way, from Castlemont High Auto Shop foreman in 1954-1955 and Vacca Valley Raceway Drags @ 109 in 13 seconds flat.
