Nissan's Titan excels in fun and function
RSS Feed

Pickup trucks, by definition, are meant to be used and often abused, so form is nice but function is essential.  Whether finding its home on a farm or in the suburbs, the Nissan Titan remains one of our favorites in the all-important area of being able to get the job done.

The Nissan Titan 4X4 SE delivers power and comfort but sets itself apart with functional features such as its bed tie-down system, factory sprayed-in bedliner, and rear doors that fold out 168 degrees for easy access.
We recently tested the 2008 Titan 4X4 SE, and while changes for the new model year are modest, the truck is still chock full of the features that matter.  The powertrain is a 317-HP 5.6-liter DOHC V-8 delivering 385 lb.-ft. of torque for quick acceleration on the highway as well as stump-pulling power.  The engine is mated with a five-speed automatic transmission designed for towing up to 9,500 pounds on the King Cab we tested.

One of the slick features that we appreciate on the King Cab is rear doors that open 168 degrees, allowing them to fold back almost flat against the bed.  This provides unfettered access to the rear passenger area.

Another favorite feature on our tested Titan was the High Utility Bed Package that, at $950, includes a factory-applied spray-in bedliner, the Utili-track Channel System with four tie-down cleats, a driver's side lockbox, and rear bed lighting and a 12v DC power outlet.  The Utili-track Channel System allows you to slide the tie-downs along the channels in the bed to just the right place for locking down a load, whether it be your wife's new antique armoire or a big block for your hot rod.

Two major additions are available for the Titan for 2008 -- a new Long Wheel Base (LWB) version and the Pro-4X model.  The LWB models offer a seven-foot bed for the Crew Cab or an eight-foot bed to go with the King Cab body.  The PRO-4X features Rancho performance shock absorbers, a lower drive ratio, additional skid plates on the oil pan and transfer case, and an electronic locking rear differential. The Titan's interior offers creative comforts and plenty of places to stash stuff.

Other enhancements for the Titan for 2008 include available Bluetooth hands-free phone system, factory-installed XM satellite radio tuner, heated leather bench seat, and several new interior colors.

As tested, with the Rockford Fosgate Stereo Package ($2,150), floormats ($125), side airbags ($1,200), the tow package ($450), the High Utility Bed Package ($950), and a sliding bed extender, the 2008 Titan 4X4 SE weighed in at $35,000.  No small price, but not too bad for a very well-equipped truck.
