Bandimere resurface sets stage for '08 Rocky Mountain racing season

Bandimere Speedway, the Rocky Mountain region's venerable quarter-mile racing venue, marks 50 years of racing excitement this year, entering the season with a new, upgraded concrete track, complete with a cooling system that includes 15,000 feet of hose and two 12,000-gallon underground tanks and a live-data timing system.  Race fans are eager to see how national racers perform on the upgraded track during Thunder on the Mountain in June and Mopar Mile High Nationals in July.

Several other notable venues and events are slated this summer throughout Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and western Kansas and Nebraska.  Parts & People has compiled a list of regional tracks, highlighting this season's premier events.

 

Colorado


The Mopar Mile High Nationals highlight the schedule for Bandimere Speedway, an NHRA-sanctioned dragstrip in Morrison, scheduled for July 11-13.  Other notable events for the season that runs from April through mid-October include: Thunder on the Mountain, June 13-15; Phil Long Ford Fest, June 29; ATS Diesels on the Mountain, July 19-20; and Pinks All Out event Aug. 9.  For additional tickets or schedule information, visit www.bandimere.com or call 800-664-UWIN.


Rick Smith, 2007 Colorado National Speedway Late Model Champion from Gering, Neb., competes during the opening day of the 2008 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series season in April.Colorado National Speedway in Erie features racing every weekend from March until early October on a 3/8-mile oval paved track.  Notable events include: the Toyota/NAPA 150 NASCAR Camping World Series, June 07; Dodge Challenger Mid-Season Championship, July 4-5; Coors Light Summer Shoot-Out 100, July 26; United Power/Touchstone Energy 150 Stock Car Racing League Southwest Tour Series, Aug. 16; and Snap-on Tools Challenge Cup XXXIV, Sept. 27.  Other Divisions include: Late Model, Pro Truck, Grand American Modified, Sportsman, Figure Eights, Trains, Legend Car Series, Super Stock, and Super Modified.  For more information on divisions, schedules, or ticket prices, visit www.coloradospeedway.com or call 303-828 0116.


I-76 Speedway is a dirt track in Fort Morgan that features four to six divisions every Saturday night through October.  The divisions include Late Models, Midgets, E-mods, Street Stock, Econos, Outlaw 1200s, 600 Mini-Sprints, Dwarfs, Mod-lites, Mini-Stocks, and Sprints.  July 4 features the track's Independence Day Special, coupled with an Enduro event.  The 20th annual Fall Classic on Oct. 4-5 features Modifieds, E-mods, Street Stock, Econos, Open Dwarfs, Mod-Lites, and Mini Stocks.  For more information, visit www.I-76speedway.com or call 970-867-2101.

Clint Vahsholtz takes a practice run in his No. 18 Super Stock before Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Vahsholtz and his father Leonard Vahsholtz, who operate two family repair shops in Woodland Park, Colo., have 32 combined victories.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a unique event that challenges drivers and vehicles.  The "Race to the Clouds" course is a 12.4-mile sprint that starts at 9,400 feet above sea level and finishes at 14,110 feet, with 156 turns without guardrails, and 2,000-foot drop-offs.  The course is partly paved and partly gravel.  The race includes 19 divisions, everything from motorcycles with sidecars to truck tractors.  This year's climb is scheduled for July 20.  For more information, visit www.ppihc.com or call 866-464-2626.


Colorado Hill Climb Association: The summer schedule, which includes five climbs, starts at Temple Canyon Hill Climb in Canon City on May 10-11, and ends with the Gold Camp II Hill Climb in Victor on Sept. 6-7.  For information, visit www.chcaracing.com.


In its fourth year, Rally Colorado is shaping up to become one of America's biggest off-road rally events.  The event is scheduled for Sept. 13-14 in Steamboat Springs. I-25 Speedway, located in Bragdon, just eight miles north of Pueblo, is an banked quarter-mile paved oval.  Classes include Late Model, Grand American Modified, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Hornets, Figure Eight, Legend, Dwarf, Mini Sprint, Midget, Mini Cup, and Street Drag.  Visit www.i25speedway.com for more information.

Western Kansas

 


O'Reilly's Airport Raceway in Garden City runs Full midgets, Jr. Sprints, and Mini-Stocks from April through October. Schedule information is available at www.airportraceway.com.

  
Other western Kansas tracks include Goodland's Sherman County Speedway, which is a 3/8-mile dirt track that runs Bombers and IMCA modifieds; and Colby's Thomas County Speedway that runs IMCA modifieds, Cruisers, Bombers, and Super Stocks.

 

Western Nebraska


Alliance Speedway runs Saturday races on a quarter-mile, slightly banked asphalt track.  Races feature Super Stocks, Cruiser, and Quarter-Mile Sprint Karts; for information, call 308-432-5421.

New Mexico

Wyoming

Casper Speedway in Casper runs through May and ends Sept. 29. The track is a semi-banked half-mile clay oval. For more information call 307-473-1016.
