St. Louis-area racing scene ready to go

No matter what gets you revved up, whether it's Funny Cars, Late Models, Modifieds, Street Stocks, or Dragsters, there is an area of track to satisfy your need for speed.  Parts & People has compiled a listing of tracks and events in the St. Louis area.

ILLINOIS

Gateway International Raceway (GIR), Madison, 618-482-2400, www.gatewayraceway.com.  
This year marks the 12th season for this all-purpose racing facility that hosts more than 250 races throughout the season.  Featured events are the aforementioned NHRA O'Reilly Midwest Nationals on its quarter-mile drag strip, the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on its 1.25-mile oval.  Another notable event is the United Black Drag Racers' Association's Black Sunday, the largest African-American motorsports event in the country. GIR also has a 1.6-mile road course used by the Sports Car Club of America and a number of local, regional, and national racing clubs.

When you want to see some of the most exciting dirt-track racing in Illinois, then the Spoon River Speedway is the place to be on Saturday night. Spoon River offers six divisions for an evening of fun-filled racing excitement.


Vermilion County Speedway, Danville, 217-443-6588, www.vermilioncountyspeedway.us.  
Vermilion's season includes UMP Summer National and Late Models Plus on June 22. On Aug. 29, it will feature the Larry Cannon Memorial for non-wing Sprints, Quads, I-Mods, and Hornets.


DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, DuQuoin, 217-764-3200, www.trackenterprises.com.  
The venue will host ARCA Truck Series & Crate LMs on Aug. 23; on Aug. 31, it will hold the USAC Silver Crown Series and on Sept. 1, the ARCA Car Series.


Illinois State Fairgrounds, Springfield, 217-764-3200, www.trackenterprises.com.  
Scheduled events at the Illinois Fairgrounds include Moto-cross on Aug. 8-9, USAC Silver Crown & ARCA Truck Series on Aug. 16, and ARCA Car Series & Sportsman Nationals on Aug. 17.


Morgan County Speedway, Jacksonville, 217-243-5896, www.morgancountyspeedway.com.  
Racing action in a variety of classes from non-wing Sprints to Mini Late Models starts in April and ends in September.


Tri-City Speedway Pontoon Beach, Ill., 636-448-9111, 618-931-7836 or 800-617-9077, www.tricityspeedway.net.  
The venue features quarter- and half-mile semibanked oval tracks just across the Mississippi River.  Divisions include everything from UMP Late Models to Factory Stock.

 

MISSOURI

Doug Coffman earned a victory in the no-electronics division during the NAPA Bracket Series on May 4 at Mo-Kan Dragway in Asbury, Mo.

This quarter-mile strip hosts Friday Fun Drags from May through November.  The entry fee for the Bracket Gambler's Race is $20, with winners receiving two-thirds of the fees. On Aug. 9 and 10, the track features the CDRA @ Mid-America Dragway. 


Auto Tire & Parts NAPA RacePark, Benton, 573-545-4700, www.autotireandpartsracepark.net.  
This track features Friday night dirt-track racing of Sprint Cars, Modified, Pure Street, and Pro4.


Fredericktown Raceway, Fredericktown, 573-783-2040, www.fredrock.info.  
This oval dirt track features UMP, UMP Pro, Late Model, Sportsman, B Mods, Pure Street, and Dwarf Modlites.


Callaway Raceway, Fulton, 573-592-7795, www.callawayraceways.com.  
This quarter-mile high-banked dirt oval features Friday night racing of B-Modified, Dwarf, Hornet, Limited Late Model, Pro Modified, and Street Stock classes.


Lake Ozark Speedway, Lake Ozark, 573-392-9977, www.lakeozarkspeedway.com.  
This 1/3-mile dirt oval track features a variety of classes, including Winged Sprint Cars and Crate Late Models.


Lebanon Midway Speedway, 417-588-4430, www.lebanonmidwayspeedway.com.  
This track features Friday night racing of Super Stocks, A-Modified, 305 Sprints, Factory Stocks, and Bombers. On Sept. 12, it will hold its Season Championship and Show Me Late Models races.


I-55 Raceway, Pevely, 636-479-3219, www.i55raceway.com.  
This is a 3/8-mile, high-banked clay oval. It races UMP Late Models, UMP Modified, Sportsman and Cruiser classes every Saturday night. A feature event of the season is the 26th Annual Pepsi Nationals on Sept. 13.


Poplar Bluff Speedway, Poplar, 573-785-8989, www.poplarbulffspeedway.com.  
This 3/8-mile dirt/red clay oval will host racing in the classes of Cruiser, Pure Street, Super Street, Open-Wheel Modified, Super Late Model, and Dwarf Cars.


Ozark International Speedway, Ozark, 417-738-2222 or 417-299-2153, www.ozarkdragstrip.com.  
This quarter-mile track hosts several events from February through November.


Lucas Oil Speedway, Wheatland, 417-282-5984, www.lucasoilspeedway.com.  
This 3/8-mile, semibanked clay oval track will hold races including A-Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Factory Stocks, Figure-8s and Hobby Stocks. Special events are the Aug. 11 O'Reilly Sprint Bandits with the Topless Sprint Car Series and on Sept. 14 the World of Outlaws Sprints Car Series.
