Mooresville, N.C.--The Mahle Engine Builder Showdown features the top engine experts from all the leading NASCAR teams. But the final competition, which determines the team that will share the Randy Dorton Memorial Trophy and $26,000, is such an extraordinary and exciting event that it attracts special guests from other racing venues as well. The 2008 finals attracted four well-known racers from the drag racing community, who certainly have as much interest in engine technology as those in stock car racing and other motorsports venues.
Racing notables attending the 2008 Mahle Engine Builder Showdown include:
> Hillary Will, Top Fuel driver for Kalitta Motorsports, who regularly turns 4.50's at 330 mph.
> Peggy Llewellyn, who has piloted her Pro Stock motorcycle to E.T.'s in the high sixes at 188+ mph.
> Doug Herbert, Top Fuel driver and team owner and founder of the BRAKES (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) program for young drivers, established in memory of his two teen sons who were killed in a driving accident last year.
> Dick Miller, of Dick Miller Racing, who is one of the country's leading racers and engine builders of Oldsmobile-powered drag race cars and other Olds-powered race vehicles.
All four of these drag racing celebrities are sponsored by Mahle Clevite, and met, greeted, and signed autographs for the nearly 2,000 spectators and media that attended the Showdown finals, which are held each year at NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, N.C.
