Changes coming to I-CAR classes
RSS Feed

Portland--Beginning with the I-CAR Fall 2008 schedule of classes, there are some significant and noticeable changes occurring.  Marc Essig, lead instructor of the Oregon Committee, said I-CAR has improved the offerings in a variety of ways:
• Two daytime classes will be offered for the first time this October.

• A number of classes have updated or revised course content. These include Steering/Suspension, Overview of the Ford F-150, Welding/Cutting Steel-Squeeze Spot Welds, and Damage Analysis courses of Aluminum Repairs, Mechanical Systems, and Fundamentals of Collision Repairs.  A complete rewrite in the Refinish program 3 includes waterborne materials, equipment, and color matching.  This will be offered during the winter.

• Addition of new classes: SPS07 new metals & repair procedures for Uni-Body Vehicles.  SPS08 new metals and repairs for Body-Over-Frame vehicles.  A new class being released in August covering New Vehicle Propulsion Technology and changes.

• Elimination of the use of Social Security numbers for registration.  Attendee will be able to use only the last four digits of the SS number for their first I-CAR class; after then an I-CAR ID number must be used.  I-CAR ID numbers can be secured by going to www.i-car.com and clicking on My I-CAR, completing the questionnaire, submitting, and printing their new number.

• Steel Welding Qualification Test.  Starting with the Sept. 20 offering, the weld test will include a prep program. All full test or requalification participants will be required to participate in this program.  Those taking a retest will not.

The continued high failure rate of welds has prompted the industry to make changes by giving participants quality and relevant information and hands-on training during this class.

Cost of the prep and test has increased to seven coupons. However, cost of taking the test and returning for a retest is six coupons, plus your time and travel.  The current pass rate with the mobile testing units is over 95 percent.

The fall term schedule offers classes for entry-level employees and classes for advanced technicians, management, and insurers.  Please pick the classes appropriate to your individual needs and applicability to your employment specialty.
