SMRYNA, Tenn. – Nissan Motorsports Competition Parts (NMCP) and NISMO (Nissan Motorsports International) continue as sponsor of qualifications for the most prestigious off-road race in the country -- the 2008 World Championship BorgWarner Shootout at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway. NMCP's Ron Stukenberg has announced posting of a cash purse to the racer winning the pole position for the Shootout. The posting is part of a goliath $175,000 weekend racer purse at Crandon, including more than $60,000 for the 10-lap BorgWarner Shootout.
The BorgWarner Shootout is professional off-road racing's most prestigious event. The 14{th} running of the race will be held the coming Labor Day weekend at the fabled track. The race winner claims the massive and priceless sterling silver and 18-karat gold BorgWarner Cup – an award similar to the famous BorgWarner Indy 500 Trophy®.
"Nissan continues to be involved in racing worldwide," said Ron Stukenberg, senior manager, Nissan Motorsports Competition Parts, headquartered in Smyrna. "And in off-road racing there is no greater event than the World Series of Off-Road Racing's BorgWarner Shootout at Crandon," he said. "There are already 13 winners on the BorgWarner Off-Road Cup and we're excited to be there once again to see the 14{th} racer added," he commented.
The NMCP/NISMO Time Trials will be conducted Friday, August 29 at Crandon. Top 4x4 (PRO 4x4) and 2-wheel drive (PRO 2WD and Super Truck) pickup racers vie to qualify for the most important off-road race of the season. That race will be held Sunday afternoon, August 31 at the BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Races®. At stake in the qualifications will be entry into the Shootout and a chance to win the $125,000 BorgWarner Cup, a huge first place purse, and the mythical "King of Off-Road Racing" title for 2008.
The time trials begin at 2 p.m. for 20 available positions. 2-wheel drive race trucks posting the fastest times receive a head start in the race, as PRO 4x4 race trucks have a competitive advantage. The only 2WD racer to ever win the event was Scott Taylor (Skyjacker BFG Ford, Belvidere, Ill.) in 2002.
The 2007 Nissan Motorsports Competition Parts/NISMO "Pole Winner Award" will be presented by Stukenberg, "It is a privilege to be associated for the eighth consecutive year with the BorgWarner Shootout and Crandon International Off-Road Raceway as the Nissan Motorsports Competition Parts /NISMO Time Trials sponsor," said Stukenberg. "BorgWarner, Crandon Raceway and the World Series represent everything that is great about the sport," he said.
Last year's Pole Winner was Adrian Cenni, New York N.Y, posting a record qualifying speed. The 2007 race winner was Johnny Greaves, Abrams, Wisc. (Ed Note: Previous Pole Winners for the BorgWarner Shootout are shown below):
