MISSOURI
After 46 years of business in Appleton, City Knowles Auto Parts has closed its doors.
A bill has been introduced in the Missouri legislature in Jefferson City that, if passed, would require used-car sellers to give buyers two days to cancel the sale. The Missouri Independent Automobile Dealers Association has made its opposition clear. The bill would require car sellers to post a $100,000 surety bond and would also limit the number of dealer plates that could be issued to the state's car dealers. Current law requires car dealers to post a $25,000 bond for liability purposes. The Missouri Automotive Dealers Association, which includes franchised new-car dealerships, backs the bill. Sam Barbee, president and chief executive of the association, said state laws regulating car dealers need updating.
A Jackson County jury on March 9 announced a $17 million judgment against American Family Mutual Insurance Co. in a class-action lawsuit over aftermarket auto parts. The verdict came after a month-long trial and covered an estimated 315,000 Missouri residents who made claims for vehicle repairs between May 1990 and December 2004.
