Denver--The Audi S-series vehicles have quenched yuppies' thirst for speed for years. Audi's Quattro system makes the vehicle feel like it's riding on rails. Audi has improved the system in 2007 and Parts & People had a chance to try it out on the S4.
New for this year on the S4, equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, is a Torsen differential system that distributes 40 percent of the power to the front wheels and 60 to the rear. Audi officials said that helps give drivers a dynamic driving sensation. We couldn't agree more.
The S4 is equipped with a 4.2-liter V-8 engine that can produce 340 HP and 302 lb.-ft. of torque. Braking is a consideration on a vehicle with such great power, an area Audi has also enhanced.
A brake-disc wiping function has been integrated into the S4's Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP). The new function helps keep the brake rotors dry on wet roads. The system hydraulically applies the brakes under low pressure at intervals to ensure the rotors stay dry. Audi officials said this goes unnoticed by the driver.
All this advanced technology comes at a price, of course. The window sticker on the S4 totals $57,020, which includes nearly $6,500 in extras, not too steep for the racecar driver at heart with deep pockets.
