Palo Alto, Calif.–Gary Meissner, 65, said that after running automobile repair shops for more than 37 years, his blueprint for success is pretty basic--he keeps abreast of the changing technologies, embraces training, and treats his employees and customers fairly and honestly. By constantly learning more about diagnostic techniques, he said he's been able to create a niche for himself, making Meissner Automotive one of the leading diagnostics shops in the Bay Area.
Rancho Cordova, Calif. -- Sacramento Vintage Ford's General Manager Mike Kohout said his parts store is a lot more than just a place to purchase parts for old Fords. It's also a Ford museum, a shrine to everything Ford, and a destination for Ford aficionados from all over the globe, he said.
Davis, Calif.--For 26 years, Hoffmann Automotive operated a full-service shop out of a 2,200-square-foot Union 76 gas station, Owner Jeff Hoffmann said. "We had one-and-a-half bays and were forced to do a lot of our work outside," he said. "There wasn't much room there, but we did the best we could."
All of that changed dramatically in August 2005 when Hoffmann built a $2 million 8,000-square-foot repair facility in a new location in Davis, he said. The new building has seven bays, including one located in the rear of the shop that holds a 30,000-pound hoist, Hoffmann said.
Concord, Calif. -- West Coast Mufflers & Sport Trucks Owner Steve Elstins said
the main reason he's been able to run a successful shop for more than two decades can best be described in one word–adaptability.
"Our success over the years can be attributed to our ability to change our business model and adapt to an evolving market," Elstins said. "Changes within the undercar industry have forced us to regroup and adjust our focus on several different occasions. I believe it's made us stronger every time it's happened."
