Motorsports and performance events abound throughout the region
For the first time in more than a decade, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to Colorado.
The last time the series was in the Centennial State was September 2005. For the first time ever, races will be held Sept. 14 at the El Paso County Raceway and Fairgrounds in Calhan, 35 miles east of Colorado Springs.
World of Outlaws is just one racing venue that will provide entertainment this year -- automotive race tracks throughout Colorado and the mountain region provide opportunities for all motorsports enthusiasts to compete on asphalt and dirt, spring to fall. Events such as Bandimere’s annual Mopar Mile High Nationals, and Colorado Offroad Extreme’s (C.O.R.E.) desert race series on 800 acres of track in Deertrail are hot items in our 2016 motorsports roundup.
Bandimere Speedway, an NHRA-sanctioned dragstrip in Morrison, will host the 36th annual Mopar Mile High Nationals July 22-24. Other notable events through October include the CARSTAR Thunder on the Mountain Race, June 17-19; Fun Ford Series, features an all-Ford drag racing event and car show, June 12; the Five R Custom Truck Trucks Fest presented by Merritt Equipment, Aug. 7; and Grudge Night on Sept. 16, open to street cars, trucks and bikes. Colorado Hill Climb Association (CHCA) has a handful of confirmed climbs scheduled for 2016: July 16-17 in Monarch; the Lands End climb will be held Aug. 13-14 in Grand Junction; a final climb is set for Sept. 10-11, place to be determined. High Plains Raceway, a road course track in Deer Trail off U.S. 36, features a variety of enthusiast club events including SCCA races. All of its open lapping days and weekend events are open to the public unless specifically noted otherwise. Visit www.highplainsraceway.com.
Colorado Off Road Extreme (C.O.R.E.), a multi-vehicle off-road park in Agate, about 50 miles east of Denver on I-70. As of 2016 it is a members only park. Colorado National Speedway (CNS), a paved oval in Dacono, spanning 0.375 miles, the track is currently a member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and hosts the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West annually. Some notable events this year include the Father's Day NASCAR Knockout June 18, Famous Dave's BBQ Special, July 3 and the Colorado Christian Faster Pastor Race on July 23. El Paso Speedway, opened in 2007, the semi-banked quarter-mile dirt oval track and is located at the El Paso County Fairgrounds. The Speedway races IMCA Northern SportMods, Stock Cars, Colorado 1200 Outlaws, Hobby Trucks, Hornets, High Plains Midgets, and Colorado Dwarf Cars. Some special events include: IMCA Modiﬁeds, RMMRA Midgets, URSS 305 Sprint Cars, and RMLSA Lightning Sprints. I-76 Speedway, is a 1/4 mile high-banked dirt oval race track in Fort Morgan, features four to six divisions every Saturday night through October. Divisions include Late Models, Lightning Sprint, Midget, Dwarf, Vintage, and Hornets, which are scheduled to run every race night. Julesburg Drag Strip, in Julesburg, is a quarter-mile track and the oldest drag strip in the country with notable series that include NHRA Junior Drag Racing League and the NHRA Summit Racing Series. The ET limit at Julesburg has been lowered to 8.50 by the NHRA, and it also poured a new concrete launch pad and asphalted the pits last year. Visit www.julesburgracing.com.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), the second oldest auto race in the nation, starts at 9,400 feet above sea level, at the base of Pikes Peak, and takes racers around 156 turns without guardrails, finishing at 14,110 feet on the summit - a total distance of 12.4 miles. The course is partly paved and partly gravel and includes 19 divisions - everything from motorcycles with sidecars to electric vehicles. Known globally as the Race to the Clouds, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the PPIHC race, which is scheduled for Sunday June 26. Visit www.ppihc.com.

The Albuquerque Dragway at Mesa Del Sol is a NHRA Division Seven track that adheres to all NHRA rules and regulations. Cardinal Motor Speedway is an IMCA-sanctioned, 1/4-mile, high-banked, clay oval race track. All five race classes regularly compete every other Saturday night in Eunice, 18 miles south of Hobbs. Sandia Speedway, located off I-40, just west of Albuquerque, is a complex of various ovals, a road course, and a dirt motocross course that includes 1/2-mile and 1/4-mile paved ovals, a high-banked 3/8-mile Dirt Oval, a 1.7-mile Road Course, 300-foot Sand Drags, and Autocross.
