Last year’s winner Bobby Pierce and a host of other dirt track racers from all over the country will return to The Gateway Dirt Nationals, Dec. 19–21.

Race season and motorsports heat up in the River Valley

The 2019 racing season is upon us in the River Valley. With Stock Cars, Warriors, Modifieds, Hornets, Late Models, and more all taking to the tracks again, this year promises to deliver excitement for the whole family. We cannot forget to mention the NASCAR and NHRA action at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway (formerly Gateway Motorsports Park), and the DIRT in December Gateway Dirt Nationals, which is held inside The Dome at America’s Center in downtown St. Louis.

Parts & People has compiled a list of popular tracks in the St. Louis area and surrounding regions to give racing fans the green light on what’s going on in your area. 

 

ILLINOIS

World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway (formerly Gateway Motorsports Park), Madison, 618-215-8888, www.wwtraceway.com. This venue encompasses more than 200 acres, including a ¼-mile drag strip and a 1 ¼-mile NASCAR oval track. The track hosts weekly races through November. NASCAR returns on June 22, with the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series 200 and ARCA Menards Racing Series doubleheader. IndyCar Series Bommarito Automotive Group 500 will take place on Aug. 24. This year, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combo race will be held on Saturday, the same day as the IndyCar event. On Sep. 27-29, there will be the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals.

Macon Speedway, Macon, 217-764-3000, www.maconracing.com. This 1/5-mile dirt oval track features POWRi Midgets, 600cc Micros, Late Models, Modifieds, Pro and Amateur Hornets, Street Stocks, and Sportsman class. Races are scheduled on Saturday nights through Sept. 28. Featured events include the Herald & Review 100 UMP Summer Nationals on July 4, and the John Osman Memorial 15th Annual IL State Street Stock Championship presented by 98.1 Griz FM, on Sept. 14.

Spoon River Speedway, Canton, 309-668-2622, www.spoonriverspeedway.com. This 3/8-mile clay oval is a home for competitors in Pro Late Model, UMP Modified, Midget, Street Stock, Hornet, and SRS E-Modified racing classes. Races will be held every Saturday night through September with hot laps starting at 6:30 p.m. This year it will host a series of special events including the UMP LM Summer Nationals Hell Tour on June 20, and the Knowles Sprint Memorial, Sept. 7. This year will also feature the 2nd Hornet & E-Mod Monster Mash-a-Mania, which will run Sep. 28.

Tri-City Speedway, Pontoon Beach, 618-931-7836, www.tricityspeedway.net. This 3/8-mile dirt oval lies just outside the St. Louis-metro area and plays host to UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, B-Modifieds, UMP Crate Late Models, TCS Street Stocks (UMP Factory Stocks). The inside race track runs Micros/Go-Karts/Outlaw Karts/Jr. Sprints. The Quarter Midget Track is a separate track on the outside of the big track. This year’s major events include UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals June 21, Russ Wallace Memorial Aug. 16, and the 15th annual Summit Racing UMP Modified Mania Dirt Nationals, Sept. 26-28. Also featured this season is the Halloween Night Trunk or Treat on Oct. 12.

Southern Illinois Raceway, Marion, (618) 969-2051), www.southernillinoisraceway.org/. Southern Illinois Raceway (SIR) is a quick, high-banked 1/8th mile clay oval most often seeing lap times in the 9 - 11 second range. The popular raceway is located approximately five miles east of Marion, Ill., on Highway 13. Classes running every Saturday night starting at 6 p.m. are Juniors, Restrictors, Sportsman Class and Wing/NW Outlaw Micro, Dwarfs, and Mod-Lites. Featured events this year include the HIGHBANKS HUSTLE ($10k to win $750 to Start WING OUTLAW) from Jun. 20-22, and the Race/Chase Night 3/JERRY HOLDER MEMORIAL $1,000 to Win OUTLAW WING all other purses increased (all classes) on Sep. 14.

Highland Speedway, Highland, (618) 654-6656, www.highlandspeedway.com. Highland Speedway is a ¼-mile, semi-banked clay oval located on the Madison County Fairgrounds. Racing starts at 6:45 p.m. every Saturday night through August. Weekly classes include Late Model, Modified, ProModified and Co-Op Street Stock. Featured events this year include the UMP Summer Nationals Race on July 6, and the Greg McCray Memorial Race on Aug. 17.

Jacksonville Speedway, Jacksonville, 217-408-0011, www.jacksonvillespeedway.com/. Jacksonville Speedway is a ¼-mile oval banked track with racing every Friday night through October. Racing classes include Midgets, 305 Sprints, Crates, Modifieds, Street Stocks, Micros, and Hornets. Featured events this year include the All Star Sprints on Jun. 28 and MOWA/POWRi event on Sep. 6.

Peoria Speedway, Peoria, 309-357-3339, www.peoriaspeedway.com. Peoria Speedway is a ¼-mile high-banked oval with racing every Saturday night through October and bi-weekly Econo Night racing on Wednesdays with both nights racing action starting at 6 p.m. Saturday weekly classes include UMP Hornet, UMP Street Stocks, Crate Mods, UMP Modifieds and UMP Late Models. Wednesday Econo Night classes include Econo Hornets, 2 Man Cruisers, Econo Street Stocks and UMP Pro Late Models. Featured events this year include the UMP Summer Nationals on Jun. 12, and the 5th Annual Fall Classic Free Overnight Camping event, Sept. 20-21.

 

INDIANA
Salem Speedway, Salem, 812-883-6504, www.salemspeedway.com. This 65-year-plus complex is home to a .555-mile, high-banked, paved oval short track where on weekends it hosts points-series races for Super Stocks and Street Stocks as well as other races for Late Models, Winged Sprints, Pure Stocks, FWD Stocks, and Stunt Cars. Featured events this season include the Discover Scott County Firecracker 125 presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts on July 6, and the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers Arca Fall Classic, Sept. 14. 

Terre Haute Action Track, Terre Haute, 217-764-3200, www.terrehauteactiontrack.net. The historic 1/2-mile clay oval Terre Haute Action Track’s 2019 schedule includes World of Outlaws Craftsmen Late Models vs. Dirtcar Summer Nationals, Friday, June 28; and USAC Sprint Cars Jim Hurtubise Classic, Friday, Sept. 13.

 

 

MISSOURI

St. Francois County Raceway, Farmington, 573-210-7090, sfcraceway.com. This 3/8-mile dirt Oval, located in the heart of the Midwest in Farmington, Mo., is home to weekly racing of 410 winged sprint cars, A-Mods - B Mods, 600cc Outlaw Micros and Pure Streets. Featured events are the Dean Adams Sr. Memorial Night on July 13 and The Gateway Vintage Heartland Classic, Oct. 4-5.

Federated Auto Parts Raceway, Pevely, 636-479-3219, federatedautopartsraceway.com. Formerly I-55 Raceway, this 3/8-mile, high-banked clay oval track plays host to UMP DIRTcar Late Models, UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, UMP DIRTcar Sportsman, and UMP DIRTcar Pro 4 Stocks every Saturday night at 7 p.m. through October. Featured events include the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals vs. Morton Buildings World of Outlaw Late Models, June 29, and the Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55, Aug. 3.    

Gateway Dirt Nationals DIRT in December event at The Dome at America’s Center, St. Louis, 314-786-2636, www.gatewaydirt.com. The Gateway Dirt Nationals is fresh off the completion of another successful event in downtown St. Louis at the Dome at America’s Center. The event has remained strong now for more than three years and in 2019 fans should expect to have more of the same. The Gateway Dirt Nationals will return Dec. 19-21. The event will once again feature three divisions with Open Wheel Modifieds, Midgets and Super Late Models. The temporary racetrack — a fifth-mile, semi-banked oval on the floor will once again feature fast lap times and tight racing action.

 

KENTUCKY

Kentucky Motor Speedway, Whitesville, 270-302-6057, www.kentuckymotorspeedway.us/. Kentucky Motor Speedway is a 3/8-mile asphalt short track located in Whitesville, Ky. The track was built in 1960, with an infield figure 8 crossover added in 1981. Racing takes place on select Saturday and Sundays through October. Classes include Sportsman, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Scrapper, Thunder Stocks, and Pro 4. Featured events this year include the Motorsports Festival on Aug. 4, and the Bluegrass Classic 125 Sportsman Race on Oct.14.
