Chief’s Vulcan breaks bonds of automotive structural adhesives

Madison, Ind.–The patent-pending Chief Vulcan ADU (www.chiefautomotive.com) is the first product specifically designed to break the bond of structural adhesives in automotive applications, according to the company. The Vulcan ADU uses very short waves of infrared radiation to quickly heat the surface to a temperature where the first layer of glue underneath releases cleanly — in as little as 20 seconds. With the adhesive bonds broken, the technician can then easily separate the materials with less risk of damage to either piece. The epoxy remains smooth and hard, not sticky, leaving behind a clean work surface. The Vulcan ADU can be used on any vehicle surface, including aluminum, carbon fiber and steel.

“The need to meet 2025 CAFE standards is driving automotive manufacturers to explore an incredibly wide range of materials, joining methods and other light-weighting technologies in a relatively short period of time,” said Mickey Swartz, director of global product management for Chief parent company Vehicle Service Group (VSG). “As a result, the collision repair industry is innovating like never before to develop new tools, equipment and repair techniques.”

Keep your painter’s cool in the booth

Battle Ground, Wash.—Shoot Suit’s (www.shootsuit.com) 6400 Super Cool Air Vest works with any filtered compressed-air source to provide cooling air flow to painters. According to the company, it does not limit the air pressure used by a paint gun or air tool, and it has low air consumption, is lightweight, does not restrict movement, and is fire-retardant.

Help protect repairs with corrosion protection

St. Paul, Minn.—OEMs and industry groups increasingly call for corrosion prevention in collision repair. New 3M Cavity Wax Plus (www.3mcollision.com) provides protection that will not crack, chip, or peel - without the hassles of bulk spay equipment. The reusable 3M Cavity Wax Plus Applicator Wand Kit, with three sized wands, lets technicians deliver 360-degree coverage inside even the hardest-to-reach places.
3M Cavity Wax Plus 08852 is an interior-corrosion prevention coating for application to automotive bare or primed metals. Typically applied to panels such as door skins, rocker panels, interior quarter panels, and frame rails, it is designed to remain soft and pliable and it will not crack, chip, or peel.
According to the company, when used as directed and with the 3M Cavity Wax Plus Applicator Wand kit, 3M Cavity Wax Plus delivers the right amount of flow and wicking, providing consistent and uniform protection for the repair.
The Applicator Wand Kit provides access to inner body structures with tight tolerances and has three options: 8-inch, 24-inch, and 34-inch, to access hard-to-reach places: the 24-inch and 34-inch wands provide a uniform 360 degree spray pattern to ensure that the technician maximizes coverage with each application. The 8-inch tube delivers a powerful stream of material to flood joints and seal them from corrosive elements.
